Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) about Water Conservation and the Rebate Program

Why save water?

California is in a drought, and Southern California's water supply from both of the primary sources --the Colorado River and Northern California--has decreased in recent years. In order to protect the long-term water supply, keep costs down, and maintain comfortable homes with attractive landscapes, it is essential that we all act smart and play our part to save water.

What else can I do to save water?

Simple daily lifestyle changes, such as turning off water when not needed, fixing leaks around the house, and maintaining a water-efficient landscape can help save water in a big way.

How much water do I use now?

On average across the country, single family homes use 171 gallons of water per person, per day. Just over one-third of that is used indoors for laundry, showers/baths, toilets, sinks, washing dishes, etc. About two-thirds or more of total daily use goes toward landscape irrigation.

How much can I expect to save with qualifying water-efficient products?

High-efficiency appliances and devices can help you save water in a big way:

  • Customize your outdoor irrigation system by installing a weather-based irrigation controller (WBIC or ET System) and you can reduce water use by over 13,000 gallons of water each year, and still maintain a beautiful, healthy landscape.
  • Prevent over-watering and encourage healthy plant growth with rotating sprinkler nozzles and save over 1,300 gallons of water a year.

  • How much is my rebate?

SoCal Water$mart rebates start at a base level and may be higher for customers of some participating water agencies. Baseline rebate amounts are currently as follows:

  • Weather-Based Irrigation Controller (under one acre): $80 each
  • Weather-Based Irrigation Controller (over one acre): $630 each
  • Rotating Nozzle: $4 each

  • All rebates are capped at the actual purchase price and installation cost of the product.

Who is eligible to receive rebates?

SoCal Water$mart provides rebates only for residential customers of participating Metropolitan Water District of Southern California (MWD) water agencies. This includes residents of single-family detached homes, duplexes, triplexes and fourplexes; residents of multi-family units should inquire with the Multi-Family program.

What is the status of my rebate?

You can call the hotline at: (888) 376-3314 for a live update.

How long will it take to receive my rebate?

It can take up to 12 weeks to receive your rebate check from the time that a complete form with full documentation is provided. In most cases, rebates are provided in significantly less time, but some products or water agencies require a verification before payment is issued.

Why do you need a copy of my water bill?

We need to verify that you are a customer of a participating water agency to issue a rebate check. In addition, some agencies provide higher rebate amounts, so by verifying your agency, we can issue the correct amount.

My water agency only bills every three months, and I don’t have my current bill. Can I still receive a rebate?

You do not have to submit a current bill; any previous water bill that shows your name, address, and account number will be acceptable. If you do not have any earlier water bills, the agency can accept a letter from your water agency verifying your status and account number.

I want to keep my product receipt in case I need it in the future. Can I provide a copy of my receipt?

The agency needs an original receipt to verify that this was a valid purchase submitted only one time for a rebate. If you only have one receipt and want to keep it for your records, please submit the original, with a self-addressed stamped envelope requesting return, and we will return the original receipt to you after we process your rebate.
